Devarda’s alloy is an analyst's reagent: in alkaline solution the chips reduce nitrate to ammonia, which is then distilled off and measured. The high aluminum content leaves the alloy brittle, which is exactly why it crushes so readily into chips. Nominal composition: Al 44 to 46%, Cu 49 to 51%, Zn 4 to 6%.
